Welcome from the Rector
A Message to the Class of 2026–2027
|
“Higher education is not merely preparation for a career: it is a formative awakening. We do not just build professionals; we cultivate independent thinkers who will defend democracy, master innovation, and shape the global future.” |
Dear Students,
As we step into the 2026–2027 academic year, I extend a heartfelt welcome to Albanian University.
For over two decades, our institution has stood at the forefront of higher education, establishing a legacy defined not just by time, but by the impact of our 20,000+ alumni across the globe. Today, across more than 40 active programs, our curriculum is continuously refined to harmonize deep theoretical knowledge with real-world impact, designed specifically to thrive in an era of rapid technological advancement and artificial intelligence.
Opening Our Doors to the World
This year marks a major milestone in our international footprint. We are proud to welcome students from across the globe into six flagship, top-class English-language programs:
- Dentistry
- Pharmacy
- Nursing
- Psychology
- Public Administration
- Information Technology (IT)
This is only the beginning. With additional English-taught programs launching next year and in the years to follow, we are actively building a comprehensive, world-class English-language university rooted in the heart of Europe.
You, our students, are the core of our institutional purpose. Everything we build, research, and teach is centered on your growth. Behind this commitment is a distinguished faculty engaged in groundbreaking research, international collaboration, and high-impact scholarship that keeps our academic ecosystem vibrant and forward-looking.
Beyond the Classroom: Education as a Civic Imperative
Yet, what we offer you is far greater than professional training: it is a transformation.
We live in a pivotal historical moment. Across the globe, the foundational pillars of open societies, namely democracy, liberal constitutionalism, and the rule of law, are facing unprecedented strain. I urge you to interrogate these concepts deeply. To understand the world today is to recognize the dangerous rise of illiberalism and authoritarianism, even within societies long considered beacons of democratic stability.
History has repeatedly taught us the perils of institutional conformity—the misguided impulse toward forced alignment, or Gleichschaltung, where dissenting voices are silenced and power is centralized. But that era belongs strictly to the past. True societal resilience relies on the understanding that no single entity holds a monopoly on wisdom; progress requires dynamic checks and balances, robust debate, and institutional friction.
Therefore, your education must do more than prepare you for the job market. It must equip you with the intellectual courage and moral clarity to defend democratic values, insist on structural accountability, and lead with integrity in public life. The future of Albania, along with its place in a united Europe and a global world, rests in your hands.
An Invitation to Dialogue
As Rector, your academic and personal evolution is my highest priority; it is the true benchmark of our success as a university.
As a philosopher, my life’s work is rooted in the study of liberty, autonomy, and political responsibility. I believe deeply that human judgment, ethical reasoning, and critical thought are irreplaceable. My door is always open to you. I invite you to step into my office, challenge ideas, and engage in dialogue on these vital questions whenever you feel moved to do so. I will always make the time.
We are confident in our mission, fiercely committed to your potential, and honored to walk this path with you.
Welcome to Albanian University. May this year be intellectually demanding, deeply inspiring, and transformative.
Prof Dr Julian Fink BPhil DPhil (Oxon)
