Department of Legal Sciences

Head of Department: Dr. Ismail TAFANI

The Department of Law is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Albanian University and functions as a core unit for the development of teaching and research work, including homogeneous research fields and grouping the respective teaching disciplines. The Department promotes, co-ordinates and manages teaching and research activity in the study programs it offers.

This department follows the mission and the main objectives of higher education with a view to: creation, transmission and protection of knowledge through teaching and research; the formation of senior specialists and the preparation of new scientists in line with the development priorities of the society in enhancing the standards of democracy in society. It is organized and functions in accordance with the legislation on higher education in the Republic of Albania, the Statute and the regulations of the institution.

Bachelor Degree in “Legal Studies”

The Bachelor study program in “Legal Studies” was licensed with the approval of the Ministry of Education and Science no. 8981, dated 27.12.2005. This study program was initially accredited as a 4 year system via Order of Minister no. 541, dated 01.12.2010, and has been reorganized by a 4 year study program in a 3 year program via Order no. 295, dated 11.09. 2009. In the academic year 2017 – 2018, this program was re-accredited by the ASCAL Accreditation Board Decision no. 87/1, dated 20.10.2017.

The Bachelor study program in “Legal Studies” has been designed and implemented with the aim of providing basic knowledge on general scientific methods and principles and specific skills in the field of law. It has as a fundamental objective the formation of basic knowledge in the field of legal studies. Upon completion of studies, the student will be able to analyze legal facts, concepts, legal framework at national and international level or public policy and will be prepared for a better and faster integration to the basic positions of the labor market.

This program obtains 180 credits and the normal duration is of three academic years, creating the necessary conditions for pursuing studies in the second cycle of study programs (Master of Science or Professional Master).

Master of Science Degree in “Legal Studies”

The Master of Science study program in “Legal Studies” was licensed with DCM No 408, dated 26.05.2010 and accredited by the ASCAL Accreditation Board Decision no. 49, dated 19.05.2017. This program aims at deepening the knowledge gained in the first cycle of study to complete the training obtained in this study cycle, enabling students to profile in one of the following profiles:

  • Private law;
  • Public and administrative law;
  • Criminal Law.

The program has a duration of 2 academic years with a total of 120 credits (ECTS). Formative, theoretical and practical activities provided provide the student’s specialization of knowledge, compared to those obtained in the program of the first cycle of study. The pursuit of the Master of Science study program in “Legal Studies” and the acquisition of a degree in this field also allows students to continue in the third cycle of studies, doctoral studies or attending the Magistrates School.

Professional Master Degree in “Criminal Law”

The Master’s Degree Program in “Criminal Law” was licensed via DCM no. 597, dated 28.05.2009, supported by Order no. 308, dated 08.06.2010, and accredited by MoES Order no. 585, dated 27.11.2012. The duration of this study program is 1 academic year and consists of 60 credits (ECTS) in total.

This second cycle study program includes the legal-criminal field and aims at vocational training of students with specific knowledge. The program prepares specialists capable of organizing, planning and conducting procedural actions that must be carried out by the subjects of criminal proceedings during investigative, judicial and executive actions regarding respect for human rights in the fight against crime and the provision of justice in the area of criminal law. Students who will complete the Master’s Degree Program in Criminal Science will have the opportunity to hire or pursue their professional career in a number of sectors or bodies related to the application of criminal law.

This program is suitable for those who want to work in the field of advocacy, as lawyers at independent institutions, legal centers, etc. Students can either hire or improve their curricula in structures such as non-governmental organizations dealing with the protection of women or the protection of minors, as well as those dealing with the protection of human rights or even the prisoners in particular prisons.

 

Professional Master Degree in “Private Law”

The Master’s Degree Program in “Private Law” is licensed via DCM no. 597, dated 28.05.2009, supported by Order no. 308, dated 08.06.2010, and accredited by MoES Order no. 585, dated 27.11.2012. The duration of this study program is 1 academic year and consists of 60 credits (ECTS) in total. This second cycle study program aims to equip students with specific knowledge in the field of private law. This result is intended to be achieved through the study of specific institutes and by expanding the study into areas that are characterized by sectoral specialty. The program combines academic training with practical experience and is carried out in co-operation with the courts of different levels of the justice system and with prestigious law firms, domestic and foreign, where professional internships and practices will be held.

Students who will complete this study program will have the opportunity to hire or pursue their professional career in a number of sectors or bodies related to the application of private law. This program offers opportunities for students who want to work in the field of advocacy, as lawyers in businesses, enterprises, banks, insurance companies and legal consultants at independent authorities.
